LEWISBURG -- It seems like it will be the perfect weekend to enjoy some ice!
The 10th annual Heart of Lewisburg Ice Festival is going on, and dozens of ice sculptures will be on display.
One ice carver had an audience as he chipped away at a giant ice sculpture at Hufnagle Park in Lewisburg.
"I love to watch them carve. I think it's really neat. I think it's a great family outing. You can see the sculptures and then go for dinner," said Carla Brouse of Lewisburg.
"I think it's very interesting, the pieces, how delicate and detailed they are," said Larissa Holowaty of Frackville.
Nearly 40 ice sculptures line Market Street for the festival.
The biggest one of all is a five foot by eight foot polar bear.
Unfortunately this is the only polar bear the ice festival in Lewisburg see this year. One of the weekend's biggest draws, the Polar Bear Plunge, was cancelled because the Susquehanna River is too high. Even so, the ice festival is expected to bring hundreds of people to Lewisburg which is good news for local businesses.
"It brings a lot of foot traffic downtown. Typically there isn't much to do in the middle of winter. We get people from towns all around Lewisburg," said Scotta Magnelli, Pronto owner.
In addition to the restaurants offering specials, some of the stores on Market Street stay open late and offer a 15% discount to people who attend the ice festival.
"I think it's great. I usually try to buy something at one of the stores with my discount, usually the candy store," said Brouse.
There are plenty of events scheduled for the weekend, like the "Frosty 5K" and the Chocolate Lovers Festival.
