WILLIAMSPORT -- No matter what the temperature is outside. Many of us still need to use our vehicles to go places but when it comes to caring for your cars in cold weather. Extra precautions are necessary.
Andy Ramirez is the lead technician at Kost Tire and Auto Service near Williamsport. He said when there is ice on your windshield in the morning, o not turn on your wipers right away.
"Let your vehicle warm up, let your defrosters do their job and thaw out your window. If you do not, your wipers aren't going to work," said Ramirez.
Ramirez said the most common concern is getting in your car and seeing this message: 'check tire pressure'. Low tires cause handling problems, so you want to put air in your tires as soon as possible.
"When the cold weather hits, the air in your tires contracts. When it contracts you lose air pressure. You're not losing air, you're losing air pressure," said Ramirez.
Ramirez said he puts air in about 40 car's tires each week. That includes Rodney Wagner, who is visiting family in Williamsport.
"My sensors went off because of the cold. My tires are going flat so I figured I better get them checked out," said Wagner, of Morrisville.
The staff at Kost Tire and Auto Service near Williamsport recommends cleaning and tightening your battery connection. Also, check fluids, and make sure your headlights are working.
"If you're stranded on the side of the road in the middle of the night, the last thing you want is for people to not be able to see you. Then of course there are the common sense items like keeping a blanket in your car," said Ramirez.
Ramirez also recommends removing snow from your tires to keep them balanced.
