SCRANTON -- This afternoon in Scranton you may have seen a crowd shouting, singing, and praying on the streets of downtown.

The crowd came out despite the freezing cold temperatures to mark an anniversary and to fight for a cause.

While Tuesday may not have been the perfect day for a rally. Organizers say it was today that was important. Today is the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, a supreme court decision that legalized abortion in the US. The group rallying in downtown Scranton organized to protest its repeal.

They started out quietly, singing and praying in front of St. Peter's Cathedral in downtown Scranton. But, the sound and the message escalated as the group started marching throughout the downtown.

The pro-life rally was organized on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the supreme court decision that legalized abortion in the US. But, each person had their own reason for being here.

"I felt like it was something that I wanted to do, and that I can take this, I can brave this cold," said Rosalie Dziedzicz of Olyphant.

Even though temperatures in Scranton barely made double digits, it didn't stop the group of nearly 40 people from finishing the demonstration that took them to several stops around downtown.

"It's an important decision being the 40th anniversary of the supreme court decision of Roe vs. Wade, it's an opportunity for folks even in the midst of the cold to still witness and speak up for those who can't speak up for themselves," said Father Phil Altavilla.

Fr. Altavilla from St. Peter's Cathedral helped organize the rally. He and other demonstrators said on this 40th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, their message is more important than ever. Since recent polls show the pro-life movement is losing traction.

"We have to speak up for the unborn, they can't protest, they can't pray, and they can't vote!" said organizer Donna Davis.

The rally was organized by the Catholics Defending Life Prayer and Awareness Team. The group says they plan on holding similar rallies in the future.
