MILTON--No one was hurt when fire broke out at a home in Milton. The place was heavily damaged and firefighters were at the scene for most of the afternoon.

Heavy black smoke filled this house on Mahoning Street in Milton, and flames ripped through the building.

"It's unbelievable. I've never seen a fire like this before," Joyce Dandy said.

David Tule works at the dentist's office next door. He was finishing up with a patient when he looked out the window and saw smoke.

"One of the employees said there might be a fire next door so I grabbed a fire extinguisher and came out of the building and saw smoke coming from the building," David Tule said.

The woman who called 911 did not want to go on camera, but she told Newswatch 16 she broke a window in the house because she saw a dog inside. She was able to rescue the dog and get it out safely.

According to firefighters no one was home at the time, the fire spread quickly through the house. It did not spread to Milton Middle School and Milton High School which are right next door.

Joyce Dandy and Susan Calkin live across the street from the house.

"I looked out and it was smoke coming from a bottom window and smoke coming from the attic," Dandy said.

"I was just beside myself for the people who live there. That was the first thing I thought about. I'm just floored," Calkin said.

"It's a very nice hardworking family here in Milton. Just very concerned for the family. It doesn't look good for the house but I just hope everybody was safe," Tule said.

There is no word on what caused the fire. A state police fire marshal will most likely be at the scene tomorrow. The family is being helped by the Red Cross.
