Update 2/6/13: The votes have been tallied and the decision has been made.  The iron game token will be retired.  The replacement game piece will be a cat.

Everyone has their favorite Monopoly game piece and now Hasbro is inviting fans of the iconic game to vote using Facebook or Twitter through Feb. 5 decide which Monopoly game piece should be retired to make room for a new token.

As a part of “Save your Token,” fans will decide if the, Scottie dog, battle ship, top hat, race car, wheelbarrow, iron, thimble or shoe should be retired or placed in “jail.”

This will not be the first time that the game maker retired game pieces.  You may remember a few of these classics retired in the 1950’s; lantern, purse, and rocking hose. Also, some other game pieces were/are only available in certain editions of the game; the Man on Horseback (formerly in classic edition), Howitzer (formerly in classic edition), Locomotive (deluxe edition only), and Koala (Australian version only).

Fans will then vote for a new game piece. The choices include a diamond ring, toy robot, cat, guitar or helicopter.

Those wanting to vote can go to Monopoly’s Facebook Page or by using the Twitter hashtag, #tokenvote, to share their opinion.

From Monopoly’s Facebook page:

In an unlucky roll of the dice, every Monopoly token has landed in jail. One will be locked up forever and replaced with a new piece. Luckily, you’ll have the chance to vote to save your favorite token every day. Don’t skip your turn!
