Just when we thought Old Man Winter might be here to stay, we see some warmer weather in parts of our viewing area.
That may be good news to some people, but the winter warm-up ruined the openings of outdoor ice rinks in Bloomsburg and Lewisburg.
On Saturday afternoon, kids of all ages enjoyed the opening of the outdoor ice skating rink at the Bloomsburg Area YMCA...but the fun stopped after about two hours.
"They started to skate at 12:00 and around 2:00 we got a call saying the ice started to crack. We got everyone off the ice for safety precautions," Stephanie Rankin of the Bloomsburg Area YMCA said.
The grand-opening at the ice skating rink was cut short. The ice started to melt because the weather was too warm. The outdoor rink in Bloomsburg has been closed ever since.
"We wanted to give the community something to do for kids to come ice skate. Unfortunately it's not working out in our favor at the time," Rankin said.
Skaters who are itching to get onto the ice are disappointed.
"We were hoping to come out on Sunday and then we came. We understand because the ice melts but it would be really great if it could stay frozen," Angela Beard said.
Another popular outdoor spot that was supposed to open over the weekend is the Lewisburg Ice Rink. As you can see, Mother Nature put a stop to that, too.
"We had all of our hiring and training on Friday night, and unfortunately Mother Nature did not cooperate," Katie Davis of the Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority said.
The Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority runs the outdoor ice skating rink in Union County. The rink never opened last winter because of mild temperatures. People in Lewisburg hope for cold weather soon.
"There's limited things to do in the winter, and this is one of the gems in the community, so it would be really unfortunate if we didn't have the opportunity to showcase it," Davis said.
If the weather turns colder, plans call for opening the outdoor rinks in Lewisburg and Bloomsburg. Once the ice is safe enough for people to skate on.
