Electric bills are going up for customers of PPL Electric Utilities.

The state Public Utility Commission approved the rate hike request on December 28, 2012 and the increase took effect on January 1, 2013.

In a release, PPL said monthly bills for residential electricity users would increase three percent and bills for small businesses would increase one percent.

The company said the increase is offset by decreases in power generation charges and that the average customer’s bill is about 12 percent less than in January of 2010.

PPL said the hike was needed to pay for improvements in their distribution systems over the past two years.
