SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP -- After a few weeks of indulging over the holidays, one of the busiest places to be on New Year's Day is a gym.

Many people in our area got a jump-start on their New Year's resolution to get fit.

James Bonitz is no stranger to working out. But, in order to fulfill his New Year's resolution he's going to have to spend a lot of time at Brown's Gym near Clarks Summit. Everyone has their own reasons for hitting the gym on January 1st, for James, his resolution is to recover.

"My new years resolution is to get back into body building, I had spinal surgery in February. That's my goal, in October, to get ready for this year's competition that's in Scranton," he said.

James says he'll be at Brown's a few times a week all year to prepare. And while he says 2013 is giving him a fresh start at his goal, there's no real significance in working out on New Year's Day.

The holiday is one of the busiest for Brown's Gym. Managers say many people came in to cash in holiday gift cards and some signed up for new memberships. So, for gym members who are here no matter the season, it wasn't a typical Tuesday.

"Usually during lunchtime it's empty, today during lunchtime it was way crowded almost all the machines were filled," said Dylan Walsh of Benton Township.

Brown's Gym employees say at the height of the New Year's resolution season they'll have more than 1,000 people visit per day. But, they say that starts to level off in March when resolutions start to go by the wayside.

Managers say the crowded evenings will come later on in the week when folks take stock of just how much holiday food they've had.

Gym diehards say sharing the space with all those newcomers gets dicey.

"It does get annoying when people steal your equipment, that really bothers me," added Walsh.

But with a little consideration, everyone can have a healthier 2013.
