It was a tough time for travelers Wednesday here on Interstate 81 in Susquehanna County.
A mix of sleet and snow falling steadily made for treacherous conditions.
Truck driver Matt Zinneo parked at the rest stop just north of the Lenoxville exit for the night.
“It’s just too dangerous, it really is. It's not necessarily because of the weather really, it’s the way people are reacting to it. It's kind of an overreaction,” said Zinneo.
Farther south on Interstate 81, a state trooper came to the aid of a driver who spun out into the median.
With the bad weather compounded by heavy wind gusts, PennDOT reduced the maximum speed on Interstates 81, 80 and 78 to 45 miles an hour.
Still, many drivers here at this rest area near the Fleetville exit in Lackawanna County said they couldn’t even go that fast.
Little Andrew Lim and his family are heading home to New York from the Poconos.
“It’s taking a little longer because we have to go slower than usual,” said Lim.
The Siock family was coming up from Virginia Beach to visit family in Binghamton.
“They’ve been bad since about, we crossed the border just over Philly, it started getting bad and the throughway was really bad, and then getting through Scranton was a nightmare,” said Dave Siock.
Interstate 81 was a sea of brake lights as traffic backed up heading north out of Moosic into Scranton.
And as the snow continued to build, snow plows hit the roads to tackle the piles.
