DUPONT -- A volunteer firefighter is out on bail after being charged with arson. Investigators believe he torched a property two weeks ago in Dupont.
Blown out windows, crumbling walls, and shattered glass; this is the house officials now say was set on fire by one of Dupont's own volunteer firemen.
David Donnora, 23, of Pittston, is charged with arson and criminal mischief for starting the fire here on Main Street in Dupont December 10.
"To think over a garbage can or anything that can be in your backyard. To come light up a fire because someone thinks it's funny, and in all actuality, it's sad because someone loses their entire livelihood," said Levanavage.
According to court papers, David Donnora gave investigators "evasive answers" when discussing how and where he thought the fire started.
Fellow firefighters were also surprised that Donnora was the first to respond to the scene. Donnora eventually told police he set a lighter to a couch outside the home.
The fire marshal said the fire started here on the back porch but neighbors say it quickly moved to the front of the house. They said once they learned it was arson. They were concerned their homes would be next.
"We thought wow. What kind of property is this person targeting?" said neighbor Pat Nayabich.
Pat Nayabich lives across the street from the home and says it's unsettling that a volunteer fireman was charged with arson.
"Apparently he must like fires. Seems to be a trend these days. There seems to be quite a few local firemen starting fires so I don't know what the answer to that is," said Nayabich.
