WILKES-BARRE---In Wilkes-Barre Wednesday night, more than 70 people gathered for a vigil to honor victims of the Newtown, Connecticut shooting.

On Public Square there was a chair and a candle for each victim.

"The whole idea of planning was that we could, as a community, express our sympathies and condolences to the Newtown community," said Rabbi Roger Lerner of Kingston.

The vigil was a tearful one for many, as they prayed and then had a moment of silence for the lives cut short, for the little girl who loved horses, the little boy who wanted to be an architect, for the teacher credited with saving the lives of her students.

"In remembrance of the kids that died, they didn't deserve what they got, and it's sad, it's really sad," said Marissa Ungereit of Kingston.

The vigil was in honor of those who lost their lives, but organizers said it was also meant to heal the hearts of those here.

"Hopefully, as we think deeply and long about … those things, we can change our ways and how we interact and work with each other," said Rev. Daniel Gunn of Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church.

Some at the vigil said like the people of Newtown, they will never really heal from what's happened.

"I don't think there is any healing for it, to be honest, you know? All I can think about is what the parents thought," said Lisa Bolmer of Kingston.
