POCONO TOWNSHIP -- A fourth grader at Monsignor McHugh School said she's confused about why she was sent home after showing classmates a picture of a kitten holding a gun.
School officials said the picture was inappropriate to bring to school, especially after the tragic shooting in Connecticut on Friday.
Now, the parents of nine-year-old Jasmine Hagner pulled her from the school.
"This is the picture I brought with me. It's just like a little cat holding a fake little gun," said Jasmine Hagner.
Jasmine said soon after she was showing the picture she got from a neighbor, a teacher noticed the picture and Jasmine was sent to the principal's office.
"She said this is not appropriate because, 'Did you hear what happened on Friday?' Then I said, 'No', because I don't know what she's talking about. Then she said 'This is kind of threatening,'" said Jasmine.
Then, Jasmine was sent home for the day and her parents were called to pick her up.
"It's a picture of a cat with a fake gun. It doesn't say anything, it's not malicious, it's not hurting anyone, harming anyone, talking about anyone. It's just a funny picture a nine year old thinks is hilarious," said Nicole Hagner, Jasmine's mother.
The Diocese of Scranton sent us this statement:
“In response to a matter pertaining to a student enrolled at Msgr. McHugh elementary school, school officials reacted in accordance with established protocols.
“The matter was brought to the attention of the student's parents, who made a decision to dis-enroll their children from the school. At no time was any student or staff member in any danger. The Diocese of Scranton respects the parents' decision and remains committed to its responsibility to protect the health, welfare and safety of its students and staff."
Nicole said her son in first grade also brought in a copy of the same picture and nothing was done, but Jasmine was sent home.
Nicole is very upset with how the school handled everything and has decided to pull both children out of Monsignor McHugh School. She will be enrolling them into cyber school.
