WILLIAMSPORT -- Students, faculty and staff at a college in Lycoming County came through in a big way for the Toys For Tots program.

Whether under the Christmas tree or packed in bags and boxes, hundreds of children's toys are destined for kids all over Lycoming County.

The donations have poured into the admissions office at Lycoming College and some so-called "elves" have grown more excited with each new toy.

"It's great to see everyone bring the toys, fun to look through the toys. Overall a great experience that will benefit a lot of families," said Elizabeth Greenaway of Lycoming College.

More than 1,200 toys were collected thanks to students, faculty and staff at the college in Williamsport.

"You get to see all the new toys. These kids are going to have a blast. These toys are awesome," said Anna Duffey of Lycoming College.

It took more than two months to collect more than 1,000 toys but just one day to pack them up and ship them off to the Marine Corps League and Toys For Tots.

"We figure there will be more families served, more kids than in the past because the way the economy has been, people need the help," said Bill Dougherty with the local Marine Corps League chapter.

When it was time to load the toys into trucks it took a whole crew to get the job done. Bags and boxes filled three pickups and a trailer. In all, organizers said more than 3,000 tots will get a toy this Christmas thanks to donations like this.

"There's always a need, there's always children that don't have a lot of toys, that aren't as fortunate as the rest of us. So it's something we like to continue to help with year after year," added Greenaway.
