LEHIGHTON -- In the wake of Friday’s terrible tragedy in Connecticut, memorials and vigils have been held in areas all over the country.

In Carbon County, a memorial has been placed in a park in Lehighton.

At the North Third Street entrance of Skyline Park in Lehighton, 26 candles surround a glowing angel.

The candles represent the 26 victims, including 20 elementary school students, killed by a gunman in Connecticut on Friday.

Charlene Sterling runs the Curious Kids daycare center in a church across the street and said she doesn’t know who left it but she likes it.

“This morning when I came in I noticed it. I thought it was pretty nice,” said Sterling. “Actually, earlier, there was a guy out there, playing a guitar and singing songs and stuff.”

A picture appeared on Facebook over the weekend as people in Lehighton began discovering the memorial.

With more than 2,600 likes, the poster wrote, “In the small little town of Lehighton, Pennsylvania, someone has a huge heart and much compassion towards all the victims.”
Parents picking up their children at the daycare say this gesture shows them there is still good in this world.

“That’s amazing that people would actually do that, just come out and put a memorial there,” said Michael Hall.

“It’s very nice, it’s probably how most of the country is feeling,” said Matty Olliver.

Memorials have been popping up in communities across the country. In this time of shared grief, the nation is coming together to try to understand this latest act of violence.

“It’s scary because we do have the kids here that are young like that so we always keep the door locked anyway but just the fact that they could just barge in like that, it’s scary,” said Sterling.

“I have a two year old, I have a nine-year-old daughter and then I have a six-year-old son, so once I heard that it just killed me,” said Hall.

“There’s parents who put their kids to school and they don’t get to get them back,” said Olliver.
