SCRANTON -- School districts across our area are taking precautions in light of Friday's elementary school shootings in Connecticut.

Officials in the Scranton School District increased police presence this morning at each of its elementary schools.

An unmarked police car patrolled McNichols Plaza Elementary along South Irving Avenue.

The superintendent said he requested the extra security, one step the district is taking today to make sure students are safe.

“I'm going to be meeting with the police chief today to sit down and talk about emergency preparedness plans (and) meeting with my principals later today to review our lockdown procedures and our evacuation plans. I think we all need to have a heightened awareness,” said Superintendent William King.

In addition to police patrols, King said each secondary school in the district has a school resource officer.
