SHENANDOAH -- Fire officials said a Christmas tree caught fire sparking a blaze that destroyed a family's home in Schuylkill County. The family is doing their best to recover.

Maria Colon walked into her home near Shenandoah for the first time since fire wrecked the place. She was outside when fire the broke out Wednesday, and her two children were at school.

Officials said the fire started in the Christmas tree, but the exact cause is unknown. Colon said the blaze has made Christmas uncertain for her family.

"For now Christmas is on hold, I don't know what I'm going to do yet. So far just took the kids to the hotel and find out what to do with them. I told them not to worry, I would try and replace everything I guess," said Colon.

Neighbor Mark Nicholas said he and Maria went into the home and tried to put the fire out.

"It's unreal, it's unreal, the devastation inside is, I have no words that can even explain it," said Nicholas.

Colon explained she invested a lot to give her children a decent place to live.

"Every single penny that we had we put in the house, it`s like all your sacrificing is coming at you, and now you have to start all over again," said Maria.

The family said they have insurance, however it's unclear if they'll be able to rebuild.
