John Hynes will have to wait another day to become the all time wins leader in franchise history as a head coach. The Portland Pirates, behind some familiar faces, came into town Saturday night to beat the Penguins 4-3 in a shootout. Former Penguin Chris Conner and John Slaney, now an assistant with the Pirates, were on hand Saturday night.

After a disappointing loss to the rival Hershey Bears on Friday night in front of their home crowd, the Penguins came out swinging.

Within the first five minutes, the Penguins added two goals. The first came from Trevor Smith, who added his eighth goal of the season. A little over a minute later, Jason Megna scored his first goal of 2012. The Pirates pulled netminder Mark Visentin for recent call up Mike Lee, who would remain in the game saving twenty-eight of twenty-nine shots. His counterpart, Brad Thiessen stopped thirty of thirty-three shots on the evening.

In the second period, Riley Holzapfel put the Penguins up 3-0 at the midway mark of the period. Then, the rough stuff started. Twenty penalty minutes in the second were the results of fights which involved Bobby Farnham, Alex Grant, Steve MacIntyre, and Eric Tangradi of the Penguins.

The Pirates tied the game at three in the third with goals from Jordan Martinook and top prospect Oliver Eckman-Larsson. After a scoreless overtime period, the Pirates defeated the Penguins in a shootout 2-0. The shootout goal that sealed the deal came from Chris Conner.
