HONESDALE — In one week, the Toys for Tots organization that serves Wayne and Pike Counties will be distributing toys to children in need.
But the organization itself is also in need of toys for teenagers.
Most of the Toys for Tots warehouse near Honesdale is filled with toys, that is until you get to two back rooms in the building.
Those rooms are where toys are located for infants and teen boys and girls.
“As a mom, that’s not a call I want to make. I don’t want to call some mom and tell her, ‘Yes, I can help your nine-year old and your eleven year old, but your 14-year-old son, we can’t help with this year,’,” said Shari Tirado, the Toys for Tots Wayne/Pike Counties Coordinator.
The organization is looking at serving 300 teens.
Each teen normally receives three to five toys.
But giving one toy per teen is not something the Toys for Tots Coordinator wants to do.
“These children are in need and probably would be fine with one toy, but most of us are moms and dads. We’ve all gone under the Christmas tree. It’s hard to think you’re going to give one child one little toy,” said Tirado.
Another group in need of toys is infants.
The coordinator is hoping the community will pull through and help bring some Christmas to children in need. Not only by donating toys, but opening their wallets.
“Monetary donations give us the ability to buy toys for the areas we are lacking in,”. said Tirado.
