CLARKS SUMMIT -- Not much was left of a tractor-trailer after a crash on the northeast extension of the Turnpike near Clarks Summit.

State police said it happened just before 8:00 a.m. Friday.

The driver lost control, and the trailer rolled onto its side killing the person inside. Some drivers we spoke with said ice may have been to blame.

"Roads were really bad coming up from Horsham up to Syracuse. It's really treacherous," said Dave Sidoni, of Horsham.

"They were icy. I saw everyone coming down this morning. They had their flashers on. I started to stop and every so often I kept hitting icy patches," said Carol Kemler, of Old Forge.

"Just stopped, and there was ice on the dividers and there were two car accidents and a tractor-trailer turned over," said driver Bobby Anashay.

Authorities also tell us there was a second crash near the tractor-trailer wreck.

At least one person was taken to the hospital. Both caused some serious traffic backups.

It was finally three hours later that officials started detouring vehicles behind the crash, and they had to do it, on the wrong side of the highway.
