THROOP -- Fire hit an apartment building in Lackawanna County early Wednesday.

It got its start around 4:30 a.m. in the building in the 200 block of Pancoast Street in Throop.

Firefighters said there are five apartments and nine people lived there.

One person was taken to the hospital for breathing smoke.

Valerie Weekes lives in one of the apartments.

"I smelled the smoke and I got up and when I looked up, the whole place was smoked up, the bathroom on fire. And I jumped up and tried to find some shoes, tried to find something to get out of the place," said Weekes.

There is no word from fire officials on the cause of the fire.
