BLOOMSBURG -- A well-known playground in Bloomsburg that was destroyed by the flood of 2011 will be rebuilt. The town kicked off fundraising efforts Tuesday.
Children spent the day playing at the Bloomsburg Town Park, but there is empty space at the park where a playground called Kidsburg used to be. Kidsburg was destroyed in last September's flood, and it was torn down in April.
Kidsburg will be rebuilt, and thanks to a business in Bloomsburg, efforts to rebuild are one step closer. Kawneer Company donated $20,000 to the project.
"Kidsburg holds a lot of great memories for our employees and their families and, I think, the whole community here," Alex Heinrich of Kawneer Company said.
"They know how important this is for the town, how much this playground means to everybody and how much it has been used," Deb Huckans said.
Deb Huckans is on the committee to rebuild Kidsburg. She says it will cost around $250,000 to rebuild.
The new Kidsburg will be built across the street from where the old one was. Organizers say that is because the new location is on higher ground and it will be less likely to flood.
"It would be very sustainable and easily cleaned up," Huckans said.
Huckans hopes other businesses in Columbia County will follow in the footsteps on Kawneer Company and donate to the project.
"The sooner we rebuild the playground, the sooner everybody can start to use it again," Huckans said.
People who will use the playground look forward to the finished product.
"Our kids aren't old enough to play on it just yet, but when they do build the new one, it will be wonderful because they will be ready to play on it," Sara Mika said.
