SCRANTON -- A time-honored holiday tradition once again has taken place in the Electric City.

Wednesday evening, folks turned out for the 52nd annual lighting of the radio tower that sits on top of the Scranton Times building.

With the flip of a switch, the Electric City was officially in holiday mode.

The annual lighting of the radio brought out dozens of families on Thanksgiving eve.

“The music, and we like the lighting of the tower. They like the fireworks, they like it all,” said Carol Evanusa.

“It’s so much fun and I like the music, it’s really cool,” said Alexis Robinson.

About 500 light bulbs sparkled in red, blue, yellow and green on the 300-foot tower as a block party took place below.

Many said this is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.

“Put them in the holiday spirit, Thanksgiving’s tomorrow, get them ready to go,” said Shamus Ford.

“Music, the atmosphere, makes it feel like family,” said Nicole Lipinski.

While the lighting ceremony has taken place for more than 50 years, this is only the third year the block party has been part of the event.

Many families said it’s becoming a part of their Thanksgiving tradition.

“It’s wonderful, wonderful, as we just sit here and we’re waiting, and we’re excited, and we’re going to see the Christmas lights, right?” said Jennifer McShane-Heil.

From live music, to lots of delicious food vendors, to flashy toys for the kids, there was plenty to keep everyone entertained.

For many just having the free event is something to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving holiday.
