NORTH TOWANDA TOWNSHIP -- The crash that happened Tuesday morning in Bradford County involved a total of three people: a man and girl in a Saturn, and another man in a Subaru.

When Newswatch 16 arrived at the crash scene before noon, an SUV was hanging off the bridge on Route 220 in North Towanda Township.

State Police and rescue crews blocked off the road as they worked to clean up the crash on the bridge over Route 6.

Two SUVs were involved. Troopers say one of the vehicles traveling southbound tried to pass another and then crossed the double yellow line.  When it did, that SUV smashed head-on into the other vehicle traveling northbound.

Scott Halbfoerster, 44 of Dushore and John Ambrosone, 65, of Hammondsport, New York were killed.  Both men were the drivers.

A young girl in Halbfoerster's SUV was flown to Geisinger Medical Center near Danville.

Workers at the nearby Tomahawk restaurant say they saw smoke shortly after the crash then immediately called 911.

"When we looked out the car was in smoke, and then there were two surveyors that were down on the hill and they ran up tried to open the one door on the vehicle, but could not open it. Then proceed to the other vehicle and couldn't open it. Then we saw it in flames," said Yvonne Maloney, a waitress at Tomahawk restaurant.

Benjamin Felten`s back porch faces the over pass, he said he didn't see the crash happen but saw the horrible aftermath.

"When I went on the back porch the first thing I saw was one vehicle that was billowing smoke profusely," said Felten, who is from Towanda.

"I've lived here my whole life and as far as accidents on this road, I've never seen anything as extreme as this," Felten added.

There`s still no word yet on the condition of the young girl.
