Pet Peeves: Gym Etiquette

WILKES-BARRE-- Newswatch 16's Trish Hartman loves to exercise, so she went to the gym to find out what grinds people's gears while they are pumping iron.

Getting in shape and staying in shape takes hard work and dedication, but sometimes when you are at the gym, there may be some things that throw off your routine.

In talking with people working out at Odyssey Fitness in Wilkes-Barre, we heard about some frowned upon actions.

"When people are just sitting on their machines just taking up the machine and you want to use it and they're just talking to people on it," said Josh Sollenberger of White Haven.

Josh Sollenberger is a regular at the gym and has learned a way to gently resolve the issue.

"I just go up to them and just say, 'How many more sets do you have?' or 'Are you almost done?' and they kind of get the hint and hurry up," he said.

Then there is Tom Lovecchio, a football and baseball player trying to stay in shape during the off-season.

"When there are bigger guys that are doing heavier weights and they start to do it and they grunt and scream and everybody just stops and stares at them and they're like, 'What are you doing?'" said Tom Lovecchio of Wilkes-Barre.

Lovecchio said he has never done anything about his pet peeve.

"No, because they're all bigger than me so I'm not saying anything to them," he said.

"I don't like when the guys slam the weights," added Andrea Briggs of Mountain Top. "It's annoying. It's loud and it scares me."

Irene Yorn from Mountain Top hates it when people do not wipe down the machines, even though there are signs up telling people to do so.

"I wipe them down myself and I have my towel so if I'm laying down on something, I put my towel down so I'm not actually physically touching something," said Yorn.

Ken Wall, the fitness director at Odyssey said when people join, they go through a gym orientation so members are successful and considerate.

"From an efficiency standpoint, everybody only has x-amount of time to work out so we're big on teaching people to be most efficient with their workout and that doesn't include hanging out in between sets," said Wall.
