POTTSVILLE -- A man and a teenaged girl are still recovering after they jumped from a third floor window to escape a fire over the weekend.
Pottsville firefighters took video from their dash cam on Saturday as they headed to a smoke-filled home. There were reports of two people trapped inside.
By the time crews arrived at the place on North 16th Street, the people had already jumped from a third story window. Those people were Rhoda Sedlak's boyfriend, Brian Dunlap, and her 13-year-old daughter, Brianna Parks.
"If they wouldn`t have jumped, they wouldn`t have made it. So I was proud of Bri for making that decision and Brian," said Rhoda Sedlak.
Next door neighbor Frank Beadle saw them jump.
"There was a guy hanging out of the window, saying 'Somebody please catch me,' and at that point, there were no firetrucks here," said neighbor Frank Beadle.
It's right about here where Brian and Brianna landed after they jumped 35 feet from that window. The fire chief says jumping from fires isn't something they typically like to see but in this case it saved their lives.
"You couldn't see your hand in front of you. I don't think they had much choice," said Pottsville Fire Chief Todd March.
Brianna has been released from Lehigh valley hospital with a sprained ankle.
Brian is still being treated for several broken bones.
Rhoda Sedlak says she had no insurance on the home and is getting help from the Red Cross.
She says she's happy everyone made it out, but knows it's going to be a long road ahead.
"I feel like crying. I lost my cats. Two of them are saved, but it's going to be hard," said Sedlak.
According to Pottsville's fire chief, the home had no working smoke alarms. He says Saturday's fire started by accident somewhere in the kitchen.
