Three schools in Susquehanna County used some creativity and generosity to help WNEP-TV’s Feed a Friend program.
It was canned sculpting fun for a good cause at three schools districts in Susquehanna County.
“We decided to take a new twist on food collection drives for the school districts, and we did a battle of the schools, involving three schools: Blue Ridge, Mountain View and Montrose. What these schools are doing is they created can sculptures and all the food that's collected will then go to the Feed a Friend program with our collection date next week,” said Edlyn Flannery of Trehab Community Action Agency.
In the Blue Ridge school district, they decided to make a bowl filled with packets of jello and a spoon and fork made out of canned goods.
“We received 1,244 cans all together, not including all the boxes that we did receive also,” said Erin Perry, a Blue Ridge student. “We actually are going to go to the Susquehanna food bank. We bag everything from Feed a Friend. So being involved in this and then going to the food bank, it's really awesome.”
The rules of the contest were pretty simple. Take all the donated food that you can and create a creative sculpture. Some schools decided to create a competition within a competition.
At Montrose Area High School, the students decided to build a castle with their donated cans.
“Our theme was the Hunger Games. Each grade was assigned a district, and inside the districts are tributes who were two children, to collect cans from all their students and their peers. So they tried to get as many as possible,” said a student at Mountain View.
All of the sculptures were judged on creativity.
Mountain View Junior Senior High school took home the winning plaque with their Hunger Game themed canned sculpture.
Though this is the first canned sculpture contest, organizers are hoping to make it an annual event since between all the schools, they collected more than 3,000 cans of food that will be distributed to the local food banks in the county.
