WILKES-BARRE — Voters will be hitting the polls in a matter of hours, but local knowledge of the Voter ID Law is still not quite up to speed.

“I’m not so sure about the voter law though. What are you talking about?”

“Did you know anything about this voter id law?” Newswatch 16 asked.

“No, I didn’t. It was the first time I ever heard of it,” said Krystal Spalding, of Wilkes-Barre.

If you find yourself as confused as Tony and Krystal, here’s what you need to know about the law.

The controversial law was initially put in place to prevent voter fraud.  Voters in Pennsylvania will be asked to present photo identification on Tuesday, however for this election it is not required.

Newswatch 16 talked to voters in Public Square about what they do and don’t know about the rules. As it turned out, it was actually the college students we spoke with who seemed to know the most about the Voter ID Law.

“In Spanish class we had a speaker, Ms. Maria Montez, and she spoke to us about the law because everybody was concerned and confused about it,” said Yarisa Polanco.

King’s freshman Yarisa Polanco says now that the rules are clear to her, she’s ready to hit the polls.

“Are you excited to vote?” Newswatch 16 asked.

“Yeah, first time voter!”

Polls open at 7:00 a.m.
