SCRANTON---The presidential election is upon us and the polls show Barack Obama and Mitt Romney in a close race, though many polls give Obama a slight lead.

Experts said Pennsylvania is indeed a battleground state in the fight for the White House.

"The understanding 5 weeks or two months ago was that Pennsylvania would almost certainly go for Obama, now however with Romney making advances in all the polls in all the states, Pennsylvania is much closer," said Dr. William Parente, a political scientist from the University of Scranton.

He said this election will likely be one of the closest since 2000 when George W. Bush edged out Al Gore in the electoral college.

Voters Newswatch 16 spoke with said they are excited to be part of it.

"I'm quite excited to be involved in the process, absolutely, it's the first time I will be voting, so it's definitely substantial, especially with a close election, I'm very excited," said Michelle Thomas of Peckville.

"I feel like it's just going to be close, it's such a big election so I feel like I had to vote for my area and support the party I represent," said Jacqueline Clapp of Bucks County.

"I tell my students I stay up at night, I can't sleep, not counting sheep, but counting electoral college votes," said Dr. Parente.
