Hot meals were delivered to homes still without power in parts of Schuylkill County.

Soldiers with the Schuylkill Haven Army Reserves were armed, not with guns, but with containers of hot food.

They were out with the Tamaqua Salvation Army going door to door just outside Tamaqua, offering homes with no power some good food and hot coffee.

Those who got deliveries said they're grateful for the gesture.

“It’s so nice to see that somebody cares enough to go out and do that, help people that don’t have anything,” said Jeanne McAndrew.

Days after Sandy came through, many homes in outlying areas of Tamaqua and Hometown remain in the dark.

Residents have had to do what they could to get by.

“No cooking. I’ve been going up to my dad’s and trying to cook up there. He has power,” said Cherie Smith.

“I collect the water off the roof for the barrel to flush the toilets, and I have a wood burner to heat it to take a shower and wash, and I have a generator, and I’m running it to keep my heat on,” said David Kranch.

Some soldiers said this job is a rewarding one, getting to meet the homeowners.

“It’s actually fun to go out in the community and help people out that don’t have anything right now,” said Staff Sergeant Amanda Kerr.

There are signs that life is getting back to normal.

The businesses along Route 54 in Hometown were dark for days, but are now open.

At the Beacon Diner, people were glad to it see back in the swing of things.

“It was so dark the other night, and now to see all the lights it’s great. It’s great because we come here a lot,” said Pat Boran of Hometown.

The Tamaqua Salvation Army in Tamaqua is now operating a shelter. It's located at 105 West Broad Street, Tamaqua, PA 18252

There are cots; people are just asked to bring blankets and pillows.
