SUNBURY -- Crews in Sunbury spent the morning picking up leaves...clearing the drains in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy.

"I just moved my car voluntarily so they could get the drains so it wouldn't flood. We don't have a problem with water in our cellar but next door they do," Linda Redelberger said.

Emergency crews in Sunbury are taking no chances with this storm. Sunbury Fire Chief Mike Rhoads is over-seeing radio and computer communications at the Americus Hose Company on Front Street.

"We've had our department-wide city EOC established since 7:00 a.m., monitoring the tv stations to keep us informed with what's going on," Rhoads said.

Rhoads says firefighters will work 12 hour shifts, so crews stay rested. All County offices were closed in Northumberland County. The usually busy Front Street was quiet as many stayed home and got ready for the storm.

"Closing all the windows, getting the leaves cleaned up, going for groceries, cooking a few things ahead that we don't need the stove to do," Arlene Brown said.

People who live near the Susquehanna River near Sunbury say they're not too concerned about flooding, they are more worried about losing power.

"I think it could be bad yet. I think the power outages are going to be the main thing," Brown said.

"My main concern is power outages. I have two freezers full of food. So that is my main concern," Redelberger said.

Chief Rhoads is asking people to use common sense. He says please stay inside.
