WILKES-BARRE — All hands are on deck for the big storm in Luzerne County.
The city of Wilkes-Barre has already started closing flood gates near Solomon Creek on South Franklin Street, and a few blocks away on Waller Street.
Although there is concern along the creeks, emergency management officials are not expecting bad river flooding with this storm.
Right now, the National Weather Service is only expecting the Susquehanna River to reach water levels of 15 or 16 feet. Right now it’s at about 3 feet.
But 15 or 16 pales in comparison to last year’s flooding of well over 40 feet of water in the Susquehanna.
Luzerne County EMA crews are now making sure all their equipment is ready for any kind of emergency situation.
“Clean up, cutting of trees, clearing of roads with the public works folks to firefighters, EMS workers for anybody that may be trapped in their homes should things like that occur,” said Stephen Bekanich, Luzerne County EMA director
Officials in the city of Wilkes-Barre said they’ll make a decision within the next few hours to close up the other two flood gates near Solomon Creek.
