WILKES-BARRE -- The city of Wilkes-Barre was hit with a fine by the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue after an investigation failed to locate thousands of gallons of missing gas.
A city spokesman confirmed Wilkes-Barre paid $26,000 of taxes and fines for the missing fuel.
The city claims the problem stems from bad record keeping and plans to appeal the fine.
The Luzerne County District Attorney's office opened an investigation in July to determine where 67,000 gallons of unaccounted gasoline went over a two-year period.
