A former teacher from East Stroudsburg who police said was murdered earlier this year will be honored Friday morning by friends and family.
A golf tournament is scheduled in the Poconos to celebrate a man dedicated to education and his community.
Joseph Devivo, 87, is a former East Stroudsburg Area school teacher.
According to his son, Devivo was a terrific man.
“My father was an avid golfer for much of his life. He played at Glen Brook for more than 50 years. He continued to play golf up until the last year of his life,” said Joseph Devivo Jr., Devivo’s son.
In February, Devivo went missing.
Police said his remains were found two weeks later in South Carolina.
Rico Herbert is now charged with Devivo’s death and is locked up in Monroe county awaiting trial.
Devivo’s son wants his father to be remembered for what he contributed to the community.
That’s why the Devivo family is holding a golf tournament at Glen Brook Golf Club near Stroudsburg to honor their father who was tragically taken from them.
“He felt very strongly about education, so the money we raise at the golf tournament is going to go to a memorial scholarship,” said Devivo Jr.
The scholarship will go to a senior in the East Stroudsburg Area school district.
A former colleague of Devivo’s, John Finelli, still works at J.M. Hill Elementary School where Devivo also taught years ago.
Finelli said he is glad the Devivo family is doing something to honor their father’s life.
“His father was loved by so many people: faculty, staff, and lots and lots of students. It’s nice Joe is going to be remembered this way,” said Finelli.
The tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Friday at Glen Brook Golf Club outside Stroudsburg.
Spots are still available.
Devivo junior hopes to award that memorial scholarship to a graduating senior who’s going to college to study education.
