HAZLETON -- Two police officers look over the damage to a Christopher Columbus statue at Memorial Park in Hazleton.

You can clearly see the graffiti painted on the platform where the statue rests.

The graffiti was washed off but there is still damage, a purple, gooey substance which does not smell.

Andy McNann drives a taxi cab. He gets his first look at what the vandals did and is not surprised by what he sees.

"It's disrespectful for one and i don't know i don't know what to think anymore. Nothing surprises me that`s what this area has become, it`s an area filled with disrespectful people who don't care about anything." McGann said

Betty Probert heads the Laurel Street Crime Watch in Hazleton . "I get annoyed, very, very annoyed that people would come and destroy something that has been here for so many years. It's not destroyed, it's defaced."

Probert added she knows the importance of Columbus.

"My grandchildren come up to the park to see the statue and read everything on it.  My oldest granddaughter did a report on Christopher Columbus and she mentioned where his statue is."

If you have any information about the vandalism to the Christopher Columbus statue, police would like to hear from you.
