TUNKHANNOCK TOWNSHIP -- An exciting announcement for race fans Monday morning: next year there will be another reason to head to Pocono Raceway.
IndyCar is coming back to the track after being gone for more than two decades.
The president of Pocono Raceway says although the new track had something to do with it, fans are the main reason IndyCar is back.
It's a moment many IndyCar race fans have been waiting for, the announcement that the IndyCar Series is coming back to Pocono Raceway July 7.
"We're truly excited. It gives the fans one more opportunity to come and enjoy the Tricky Triangle. It's going to be cool for everybody," said Brandon Igdalsky, the President and CEO of Pocono Raceway.
The last time IndyCar was at Pocono raceway was back in August, 1989.
In total, IndyCar ran for 19 years at Pocono Raceway. In fact, the raceway began as a race track for the IndyCar Series.
It's a series IndyCar driver Mario Andretti is very familiar with after being part of all but two races when Indy was at the track.
"This really completes the series as far as the venues. Now you're able to bring back the Triple Crown with Indianapolis, Pocono and Fontana. Big addition to the series'," said Andretti.
"It's the Olympics of motor sports!" said Spike Rogan, a fan.
Rogan says he's been following the IndyCar Series for years and made it his own personal mission to get IndyCar back to the raceway.
"I decided in 2009 to start a Twitter and Facebook page to bring the series back a grass-roots effort," said Rogan.
Raceway President Brandon Igdalsky says efforts from fans like Spike helped to get Indycar to come back to the raceway.
Although the newly-paved track also played a major role, in the end, Igdalsky says it's the fans who made it happen.
"Lots of fans making a lot of noise, it's truly how it happened. When we announced the paving last year, the fans kept saying, 'Bring IndyCar, bring IndyCar, bring IndyCar back." said Igdalsky.
Tickets for the IndyCar Series went on sale on Monday at 10:00 a.m. for the July 7 race.
IndyCar will be part of the race roster for the next three years.
