New Wilkes-Barre Bus Stops Confusing Riders

WILKES-BARRE -- Most people in Wilkes-Barre will tell you the widening and paving job along Coal Street is a big improvement, but there is a downside.

PennDOT and the city have changed the bus stops along Coal Street, but riders didn't hear about it until now.

Coal Street in Wilkes-Barre has gone through a lot of changes recently, first expanding from two to five lanes and now some new signs are popping up.

"Wilkes-Barre created new bus stops, and the Luzerne County Transportation Authority doesn't want to stop at the designated stops that Wilkes-Barre has created for them," said Amy Jackson, who lives in Wilkes-Barre.

Amy Jackson works at C3I on Baltimore Drive in Wilkes-Barre, but her only way to get there is by bus.

She doesn't own a car, and she's missed her bus several times in the last few weeks because of the new stops.

"A little hectic for people who are waiting at old spots, and there's people waiting at new spots. We don't know which way to go," said Jackson.

LCTA officials admit their drivers are equally confused. That's because PennDOT and the city picked new stops in order to meet federal regulations.

Three old stops are gone. Another big change is at Empire Street, where there's now only a stop heading into the city. That's the stop that Jeanette Betcher uses.

"We used to get off there all the time. All the time we'd get off that stop, but now the bus don't want to stop there," said Jeanette Betcher, of Wilkes-Barre.

In an attempt to make it easier for riders. The LCTA is now adding a stop at Wilkes Lane, just a block away from Empire Street, but Amy Jackson said there are no guarantees the buses will come.

"Some will stop, some will not. Others will do a little hand gesture saying this is not the spot," said Jackson.

LCTA officials said that will all change Friday when the new stops officially go into effect. Those changes will be posted on the LCTA web site.
