TAMAQUA -- Taking the old and making it into something new. That's what's going on in Tamaqua, and it was the theme at the dedication of two historic buildings.
The structures on East Broad Street were turned into apartments.
Herb Curvey remembers how the large buildings were used over the past century.
"When I was a kid I used to come to amateur boxing shows. I came in here played basketball, Tamaqua used to play many, many years ago. My wife worked here, she worked at Swite Manufacturing that was in here at one time," explained Curvey.
Dale Freudenberger, of the Tamaqua Historical Society said the structures are in the borough's historic district and certain things, such as the ceilings, had to remain in tact.
"We were required to ask the developers to contain the original character and integrity of the buildings," said Freudenberger.
The state and a local bank funded the $7 million project, which was spearheaded by a non-profit group.
Heather Folweiler and her daughter moved into their new apartment in August. Folweiler said they needed a bigger and safer place.
"I don't have to worry about her being on a big, busy street," said Folweiler.
Tamaqua officials said there are more historic buildings which need renovations, and chances are there will be more projects in the future.
