WILKES-BARRE -- Tuesday was National Voter Registration Day. It's a nationwide event held for the first time ever to make sure people are signed up to vote this November.
Wilkes University was just one of the many places signing people up, and organizers there said they've had a bigger turnout than expected.

"Yes."
Lots of questions, lots of double checking as Wilkes University students registered to vote at the campus student center. It's the third registration event the university has held this fall.
"Took me five minutes to write everything down and now I can go to class and know that when I have to vote and make my time, I can go and there's no problem," said Wilkes senior Amber Uhrin.
As part of National Voter Registration Day, events were held all over the country. Students like Amber Uhrin say registering to vote holds special meaning on campus. For most students, it's the first time they're doing it.
"With last election, I had just turned 18, and I didn't really know what I wanted out of a political party," said Uhrin.
"We've been talking about a lot of the issues and they seem more relevant now," said Wilkes senior Elizabeth Helsel.
Organizers are also on hand to answer any questions students have about the new Voter ID Law.
The law requires you to use a photo ID with an expiration date when voting. Before students can put on one of these registration stickers, the organizers here have been making sure they have an ID that has an expiration date, and if they're using their Wilkes University ID, that means going to go through a few extra steps.
That's because the Wilkes University ID's don't have expiration dates on them.
"We already have worked that with our public safety office where they can go and get issued a new one with the actual expiration date on it," said Erica Acosta, the associate director of Wilkes University Diversity Initiatives.
Getting a new Wilkes ID for voting will be free, so all staff and students will have a chance to cast their ballots. Then they will have an option to vote on campus in the Martz Gym.
Wilkes University will hold a few smaller events over the next few weeks reminding students that the last day to register to vote is October 9.
