HANOVER TOWNSHIP -- In Luzerne County, a community came together to help a local fire department in Hanover Township.
Several volunteers and companies helped tear down old buildings, and get rid of debris and garbage, all to make way for a new fire department.
What used to be an old lumber company on the San Souci Highway, will soon be cleared away and made into a new fire headquarters.
“It's going to give us a central location, and the building will be manned 24 hours a day, with a minimum of one person on duty which allows us to be anywhere in Hanover Township in minutes," said Jeff Tudgay, Hanover Township Fire Chief.
The chief said the current locations were built back in the early 1900s, and they are now starting to show their age.
The new building will consolidate four of the six current departments into one location.
The chief credits the community with helping raise money to purchase the new three acres, and he said it wouldn't be possible without help from companies like John Halliday Trucking.
“My guys are here on their own time, they volunteered to come. I brought my equipment, my trucks are here, this is all donated to the township,” said John Halliday.
The fire chief said the new headquarters will also help nearby communities.
Once the department is built, they are looking to add training buildings, and even a satellite dispatch center for Luzerne County.
“We're looking at a lot of things right here that's going to help not only the community, but the communities surrounding Hanover Township,” said Tudgay.
There is no word yet on when the new headquarters will be complete.
