SCRANTON -- Election day is six weeks away, but you cannot vote unless you register.
It's almost that time of year: time to cast your ballot on Election Day. In this year's Presidential election, your vote holds a lot of weight. That's why nonprofit organizations around the country are participating in the first ever National Voter Registration Day this coming Tuesday.
One of those organizations is the United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
"We really try to encourage our clients and our consumers to really be involved in civic engagement," said UNC Executive Director Mike Hanley.
You can register to vote at any of the ten UNC locations throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania from 8am to 5pm Tuesday.
UNC director Mike Hanley says it's important to stop by if you're a new voter, changed your name or moved, or if you have questions about the new Voter ID Law.
"People are feeling very intimidated and very confused about the new Voter ID Law, so that's one of the things we're trying to do is clear up some of that for folks," said Hanley.
The Voter ID Law requires you to have a photo ID when voting. Acceptable IDs include a Pennsylvania driver's license, passport, military ID, any government-issues employee ID or a Pennnsylvania college or university ID with an expiration date.
To cap off a full day of registration, the United Neighborhood Center will also be hosting a rally here at the West Side Senior Center to make sure people get out and vote.
"We have people studying the citizenship test and we're going to have a jeopardy game over that at 5:30 and then we're going to have speakers at 6:00 and then wrap it up by 7," said UNC Director of Older Adult Programs Cathy Hardaway.
You can also register at your local County board of elections. The last day to register to vote is October 9th, so register in September to make it count in November
we do all year long and we encourage the people we work with to get involved in the communities, to let their voices be heard, to help make decisions on what’s happening in Harrisburg and Washington,” said UNC Executive Director Mike Hanley. “With the voter ID law, I think there is a lot of confusion so decided to step in and really take a major role this year in joining with organizations across the county celebrating this day.”
