OLD FORGE -- A man from Old Forge was arrested Thursday on arson charges.

Police said William Snyder confessed to intentionally setting two fires.

Investigators said those fires happened this week at Snyder's home on Connell Street in Old Forge. First his garage caught fire and then his vehicle burned.

Snyder spoke to Newswatch 16 after those fires about his fears an arsonist was on the loose.

"Is he the one? Billy?! Oh, oh I didn't know. Oh, you never know," said neighbor Peggy Bazzarri when she learned Snyder had been arrested.

Bazzarri lives just a few houses down from Snyder and his family.

She has known him since he was little and was shocked by the news.

"Oh I can't believe it, oh my, well I'm glad they caught him then," she said.

Investigators said Snyder is suspected of starting other recent fires in the area, including one at a vacant home.

Snyder is a former Duryea volunteer firefighter.

Fire officials said Thursday he has not been with the department in months.

"He would always be the first one call and he would always be in his gear. There's a trailer down in the breaker right here that got set on fire, Memorial Day weekend and he was the first one there," said Deanna Skutack who lives near Snyder.

"The past couple of nights I've been worried that they were going to come to my house next and even my dad, he would leave all the lights on in the house," Skutack added.

"I never in a million years would have thought he did it," said Dylan Scherer, a neighbor.
