Events were held Sunday to honor and aid those who have served our county.

To honor fallen soldiers and those about to head overseas in Luzerne County, a memorial service took place Sunday afternoon outside the 109th Armory in Luzerne County.

Soldiers placed dog tags on crosses, representing members of the 109th killed in wars dating to the Revolutionary War.

Veterans’ organizations also laid wreaths honoring the fallen. Among them, 33 soldiers who died in a train crash in Ohio while being deployed to Korea.

The event also served as a deployment ceremony for nearly 200 men and women with the 109th preparing to head overseas next month.

“It’s also to recognize our soldiers who are going to be going forward and while we hope none of them will be giving their lives, that they still will be away from their families for a year and paying a sacrifice for the nation,” said Sergeant First Class Daniel Stella.

This is the 62nd year for the memorial service in Luzerne County.

Remembering a fallen soldier and helping wounded veterans were the goals behind a motorcycle ride in Lackawanna County.

The 5th annual Sergeant Jan Argonish Ride was held at the Dalton Fire Company carnival grounds Sunday.

Sergeant Argonish was a Peckville native who was killed while serving in Afghanistan in 2007.

Money raised from the motorcycle ride in Lackawanna County will go to help wounded soldiers in our area when they return home.
