Elvetta Gemski 600th Career Win
Elvetta Gemski won her 600th career game on Saturday as the Crestwood Comets head field hockey coach. The Comets defeated Selinsgrove 1-0 in the 11am game on Saturday. Two freshman helped seal the deal when Hannah Ackers found Ashleigh Thomas open and her stroke found the back of the cage for the victory. That was only the beginning of an emotional afternoon and career win #599.
After an hour break and a junior varsity game Elvetta’s team took to the turf again to face Mifflin County. It didn’t take long to take control. The Comets earning their stripes and cruising to a 7-0 win. #600 was in the books. In the pouring rain Elvetta celebrated with her coaches and her team thanking everyone from former players to the administration at Crestwood and all of her former and current coaches.
In 2004 Elvetta named National Field Hockey Coaches Association coach of the year. She is also in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
Her record stands at 600 wins 119 loses and 23 ties.
Her teams have won 4 state titles (2004, 2003, 1999, 1988) The 2004 team went 26-0.
The 1988 team also undefeated at 24-0.
Some greats included Diane Madl who graduated in 1984 and went on to play at the University of Connecticut. The 2004 team included Christina Glenn, Jen Macri, Caitlin McCurdy (Iowa), Lissa Munley (Iowa), Samantha Parks (St. Joseph’s).
2005 grads included Elizabeth Drazdowski (North Carolina), and Amie Survilla (Duke).
Crestwood hosts Wyoming Area on Monday at Crestwood at 4:15pm.
