HANOVER TOWNSHIP — A man from New York was sentenced Monday after a jury found him guilty in May of robbing a Hanover Township bank.

Kareem Shabazz, 54, formerly of New York City, was given a sentence of life in prison for his involvement in the armed bank robbery at the M & T Bank on the San Souci Parkway.

According to court documents, Shabazz and two other people entered the bank on October 30, 2010 and pulled out weapons, including pistols and a shotgun.

The men left the bank with more than $17,000 and made their way to New York.

Shabazz was later arrested in December, 2010 with three guns in his possession including the shotgun used in the armed robbery.

At the time of his arrest, police said Shabazz was traveling across state lines to use those weapons in a home invasion robbery in Luzerne County.
