SCRANTON — A man who police believe was high on bath salts when he attacked a Roman Catholic priest has been sentenced to state prison.

Ryan Foley from Scranton was sentenced Wednesday to up to nine years in state prison.

Foley pleaded no contest to the charges in May.

According to police, Fr. Francis Landry was sleeping in his bed at the monastery next to St. Ann’s Basilica in Scranton when he woke up to find Foley in his room.

Authorities said Foley then attacked the priest with a knife.

The attack happened early on Ash Wednesday in March 2011.

Police said Foley was high on a synthetic drug known as bath salts.
