PHILADELPHIA -- Lawyers for former Penn State University President Graham Spanier have blasted a recent report investigating the Sandusky child sex abuse scandal at the university.

They now call the report a myth, a distortion of facts, and reckless.

Graham Spanier’s legal team said Wednesday morning that the Freeh Report has been given a free pass since it was released last month and they said that ends today.

Around 11 a.m. in Philadelphia, the lawyers went before the media, blasting the findings of that Freeh Report that said that Spanier was a key part of a cover-up.

The lawyers for Spanier said they did their own investigation into the report and found many flaws.

The Freeh Report blames Joe Paterno, Graham Spanier, Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley and former Penn State Vice President Gary Shultz for orchestrating a cover-up that lasted more than a decade.

When it comes to Spanier, the former president's attorneys said Freeh took “audacious leaps with no supporting evidence.”

They said Spanier did not know of Sandusky's sexual abuse and if he did would have reported it.

One lawyer for Spanier is a former federal judge. He said Freeh's report can only be seen as "a cynical attempt by a biased investigator to pile speculation on top of innuendo. And it's sad."

"He has failed here. There is nothing, nothing full or complete about the Freeh Report as it applies to Dr. Spanier. Nor am I aware of any court in the land that would accept such unsupported and outrageous conclusions as independent or any judge that would put his or her name behind them,” said attorney Tim Lewis.

When asked to explain a Spanier e-mail in the Freeh Report in which Spanier said he was concerned the administrators could be vulnerable if it was ever learned they didn't go to authorities, his lawyers said Spanier would have to explain that himself.

However, they insist he didn't know about the sexual abuse.

Spanier has not been charged in this case.
