THROOP — Crews responded Monday morning to a head-on crash on the Casey Highway in Lackawanna County.
Authorities tell Newswatch 16 five people were hurt in the crash that happened around 11 a.m. near the Throop/Marshwood Road exit of Route 6.
Officials said one car approached a stopped pick-up truck that ran out of gas. According to police, the car tried to avoid the truck and ended up crossing into the other lane of traffic and collided head-on with a mini-van.
Police said the driver of the car suffered severe injuries. He was identified by state police as Raymond Nearhood, 61, of Scranton.
Four people in the mini-van were also hurt.
Traffic was backed up in the area of the crash. One lane of the highway was closed while crews clean up the crash.
