COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP -- Two juveniles are in custody charged in connection with shooting a teenaged girl in Monroe County.

Police were called just after 2 a.m. on Thursday to Pocono Heights Road near Tobyhanna.

According to police, a 17-year-old girl is fighting for her life after a shooting, all over a bag of marijuana.

Dominique Smith, 17, of Tobyhanna faces attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other charges.

Police said he shot a young girl in the back of the head during a drug deal in Coolbaugh Township.

Cops said Smith was unhappy about how the deal over marijuana was going so he fired several rounds from a large handgun into a car with five teens.

A 17-year-old girl in the passenger seat was hit.

“The suspect opened fire on the vehicle, as far as we know there were multiple rounds fired, but only one hit the victim. She was seated in the front,” said Chief Harry Lewis of Pocono Mountain Regional Police.

Police said they interviewed the teens who were in the car, and got enough information to make an arrest.

They said a teen boy will be charged in connection with the drug deal.

Investigators said they started to look for Smith and found him in a car driven by his girlfriend, but when cops went to stop that car, Smith jumped out and took off running. For hours, investigators searched for him.

“Total time of four hours went by and suspect was taken into custody in a small wooded area, not too far from the original traffic stop,” said Chief Lewis.

Smith was found, arrested, and charged. He is locked up without bail because of the attempted homicide charge.

Police continue their search for the handgun.

“It`s the mere fact that someone is going to shoot at people for a $30 bag of marijuana. It all begins,” said Chief Lewis.
