The U.S. Postal Service plans to reduce hours at 13,000 post offices to save money. Dozens are in our area.

It's unclear how many people use the Sheppton post office in Schuylkill County. Inside you can see a few post office boxes, but those who live nearby say traffic is down. That's one reason why U.S.P.S. officials plan to cut it's hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Neighbor Sue Carter said she's not surprised.

"They're using the post office less and less. People are using email or other avenues to deliver their mail. I know my mail alone has cut back quite a bit," said Carter.

Ed Bretowski picks up his mail at the Nuremberg Post Office. He said that saves the government money.

"I think for the government it would be more expensive to deliver your mail to the house versus dropping it off at a post office," said Bretowski.

Ray Adams lives next door to the Rock Glen post office. He understands why the hours will be reduced to save money.

"People are only there in the morning or in the afternoon. There is not business all day long like there is in the big city." said Adams.

Rock Glen Postmaster Beverly Aschman said the post office is more than just a place to deliver or pick up mail.

"We have people that we might not see for days because they're living alone. They come here, they meet other people and it's a lifeline for them," said Aschman.
