MAHANOY CITY -- Fire hit six vacant homes in Schuylkill County early Monday.

The blaze started around 2:30 a.m. on North Main Street in Mahanoy City.

Huge flames were reported.

Some nearby neighbors were evacuated for safety reasons.

“We were woken up in the middle of the night. One of the police officers was banging on the door and told us we had to come out of the house, the block was on fire. We didn’t hear anything at first. The smoke didn’t come into our house, so our smoke detectors weren’t going off,” said Brittney Herbert.

Mahanoy City firefighters said the homes have been vacant since the flood in 2006 and were slated to come down.

No one was hurt.
